A better welcome home

Make a great
first impression.

From our North Finchley base, Swift Construction + Paving designs and installs driveways across North, West and East London, Hertfordshire and Essex. From traditional block paving to a clean, contemporary entrance, we bring together the surface, borders, drainage and access so your new drive works as well as it looks.

Every front garden is different. You may need more room to park, a clearer path to the front door or a replacement for tired, uneven paving. We start with how you use the space, then help you choose a layout and finish that feel right for your property.

  • A layout shaped around your home
  • Ground preparation and drainage considered together
  • Paving, edging, steps and walling in one scheme

Practical space. A considered finish.

Choose your finish

Character. Colour.
The right surface.

Start with the look you love. We will help you consider the material, the way it is laid and the construction it needs for everyday vehicle use.

Block paving

Block paving gives you room to personalise your entrance through colour, pattern and contrasting borders. A warm brindle finish can sit comfortably alongside brickwork, while grey tones create a more understated look.

We can shape the layout around parking, pedestrian access and planting rather than treating the whole front garden as one unbroken surface. Ask us about Marshalls block paving and the options that suit your property.

Cobble-effect & setts

A smaller-format, cobbled look brings texture to an entrance and gives borders extra definition. It can work as the main driveway surface or as a contrast alongside another paving style.

Marshalls Drivesys Original Cobble is an engineered concrete system with an aged-cobble appearance, not natural cobblestone. We can discuss the character you want and the appropriate product, edging and jointing specification.

Natural stone & contemporary paving

Natural stone offers colour and texture variation; a contemporary paving layout can create a simpler, more linear entrance. Both need to be considered as a complete driveway design, not just a surface chosen from a photograph.

The selected product and its supporting construction must be suitable for vehicles. We can discuss the finish alongside your house, front path and boundary walls, so the different elements feel connected.

Considering tarmac or asphalt?

These are also listed among Swift’s driveway options. Tell us about the area, access and finish you have in mind, and we can discuss whether they suit your project. We will confirm the proposed surface and drainage arrangement before work is agreed.

Driveways with more pace, scale and presence.

This page can push the design further than the homepage. The bold red band, oversized type and image-led sections help the Driveways page feel more confident, more editorial and more clearly service-specific.

Good looks start below the surface

Think about the rain.
Before the paving.

Permeable block paving and conventional block paving are not the same construction. Systems such as Marshalls Priora allow rainwater to pass through their joints into a suitably designed layer beneath the surface. The base, jointing material and drainage design all matter.

The right solution depends on the ground, levels and where water can safely go. We consider whether permeable paving, channels or another suitable drainage arrangement is appropriate. Choosing a permeable block alone is not a substitute for assessing the whole installation.

  • Existing levels and direction of water flow
  • Ground conditions and a suitable sub-base
  • Door thresholds, edges and inspection covers
  • A drainage route appropriate to the property

A complete entrance

Bring the whole
frontage together.

It is often the smaller decisions that make a driveway feel complete. We can plan these alongside the paving rather than leave them until the end.

01

Kerbs, borders & walling

Define the drive, separate paving from planting and tie the entrance into existing brickwork. Straight lines or carefully formed curves can give the layout a clear shape.

02

Steps & pedestrian access

Consider the route from the car to the door as well as the parking space. Steps, paths and changes in level should be planned as part of the whole frontage.

03

Inspection covers & drainage

Where suitable, recessed covers can take matching paving while keeping the chamber accessible. Channels and other drainage details should sit neatly within the design.

04

Security posts & planting spaces

Ask about security posts where access control is needed. Retaining room for planting can soften the entrance without losing the practical parking space you need.

Built on site, not just drawn on paper

How a Swift driveway comes together.

This page should feel more hands-on than the homepage. Alongside finished projects, it helps show the groundwork, setting out and finishing details that give a driveway its long-term strength and clean appearance.

From excavation and edge restraints to laying blocks and brushing in kiln-dried sand, the installation process matters just as much as the finished look. It is one of the reasons customers across North Finchley, Barnet and the surrounding North London area ask us to create driveways that look smart and perform properly.

Laying and cutting in

The best-looking driveway still depends on what sits beneath it — the excavation, sub-base, bedding layer, drainage strategy and the care taken when the paving is laid and finished.

  1. 01

    Set out & prepare

Measure the area, remove the existing surface where needed and plan the correct build-up for the ground conditions, vehicle use and drainage.

  2. 02

    Build the edges

Establish levels and install firm edge restraints so the paving has a crisp outline and the finished driveway holds its shape over time.

  3. 03

    Lay with care

Prepare the bedding layer, place the blocks or setts accurately, cut in neatly and keep the pattern true across the whole frontage.

  4. 04

    Joint & finish

Brush kiln-dried jointing sand into the surface, tidy the details and hand over a driveway that looks sharp and is ready for everyday use.

What will your
new driveway cost?

The size is only part of the picture. Your chosen surface, excavation, access, levels, drainage, waste removal and finishing details all affect the scope. A driveway with new steps and boundary work is a different project from a straightforward replacement.

Send Swift your postcode, an approximate size and a few photographs. We will discuss your requirements and the information needed for a free, no-obligation quotation. Your quotation will reflect the work your driveway actually needs.

Ask us about your project
Do you install driveways in Barnet and Finchley?

Yes. Swift is based in North Finchley and works across North, West and East London, Hertfordshire and Essex. Send your postcode and a short outline of the work so we can confirm the next steps for your address.

Which driveway surface is right for my home?

Start with how you use the entrance: parking, pedestrian access, levels and the look of the house. Block paving gives scope for patterns and borders; cobble-effect paving adds texture; natural stone or a contemporary finish can create a different character. We discuss suitability, drainage and maintenance as well as appearance.

Is all block paving permeable?

No. Permeable paving is a specific system with joints and a supporting construction designed to manage water. Ordinary block paving should not be assumed to do the same job. Marshalls Priora is a permeable option, but the drainage design still needs to suit your ground conditions and property.

Do I need planning permission for a new front driveway?

In England, paving a house’s front garden generally does not need planning permission if the surface is permeable or water drains naturally to a lawn or border. Permission is normally needed for more than 5 m² of impermeable paving without that provision. Restrictions can apply, including at listed properties or where permitted development rights are limited. Confirm your own proposal with the local planning authority.

Read the GOV.UK front-garden guidance (opens in a new tab)
What about a dropped kerb or a new vehicle entrance?

A driveway and permission to drive across the pavement are separate matters. A new dropped kerb needs the council’s permission. Check with the relevant authority before planning new or altered access; a driveway quotation should not be treated as approval for work on the public highway.

Check the GOV.UK dropped-kerb guidance (opens in a new tab)
How long will installation take, and when can I park on it?

The programme depends on the size, access, ground preparation, drainage, surface and any walling or steps. Weather and material requirements can also affect the sequence. We discuss the programme for your job and confirm when the finished surface is ready for vehicles rather than promise one timescale for every driveway.

Can you include steps, borders and inspection covers?

Yes. Swift’s driveway work can include kerbs, edging, steps, walling and drainage details. Where appropriate, a recessed inspection cover can carry matching paving while retaining access. Tell us about these requirements at the start so they can be included in the layout and quotation.

Do you clean and seal existing block paving?

Swift also offers block paving cleaning and sealing. The appropriate treatment depends on the surface, condition and jointing system. Regular sweeping and keeping drainage clear help with general care. Permeable joints need to remain open to water, so cleaning and any sealing should follow the relevant manufacturer’s guidance.
